Today Marand announced a plan to breathe new life into the historic Ford Geelong facility. Marand is currently negotiating with Ford about the future use of the Geelong facility to open up further advanced manufacturing jobs for Geelong. Marand Executive Chairman Mr David Ellul said “As teaming partners for Land 400, we would love to produce the BAE Systems AMV35 Hulls and Turrets here in Marand’s Geelong facility. Marand and Ford Australia have worked together for over 40 years; I’m currently in discussions with Ford to ensure we can make this a long term reality in the next chapter for the Geelong community.”

Marand is one of Victoria’s largest advanced manufacturing companies and is actively working on future long term Defence contracts underpinning the current business with operations in Moorabbin and Geelong. Marand and BAE Systems have been working together since 2015 to maximise opportunities for Australian industry on the project.

Since opening their Geelong manufacturing division on Ford’s site 5 years ago, Marand already employs >40 staff in Geelong.  Marand has been active in the local community and school STEM programs helping develop diverse career paths for students today.

Marand Executive Chairman Mr David Ellul said “Today is a great day for Marand and local community, as a privately owned family business we have always focused on developing our people. Future graduates and apprentices are paramount to the Defence Industry’s success and I’m proud to say we already have 6 local apprentices based right here in Geelong engaged in advanced manufacturing.”

BAE Systems Land 400 Vice President Brian Gathright said, “Marand’s contribution to the project already has been outstanding. They come ready to share their cross-sector experience and knowledge to provide a best-of-breed production and manufacturing solutions”.

The AMV35 is the combat proven BAE Systems solution for the Commonwealth’s Land 400 Phase 2 Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle project. In true partnership Marand have already contributed production engineering services to the BAE Systems’ low-risk and value-for-money Land 400 solution. If BAE Systems are successful on Land 400, the team will work together on additional other production opportunities for the Geelong facility.

Marand’s Alex Lyon said, “Part of being a named partner for BAE Systems on Land 400 has been making a considerable investment in the project. Marand engineers have already travelled the globe to better understand the production process of these hulls and turrets. These combat proven vehicles have been manufactured in several first-world countries already. The lessons learnt ensure that the ultimate Customer receives a solution they can be confident in.”

The Land 400 project provides Marand with manufacturing opportunities for the next 10 years, and potential support opportunities for out to 30 years. Marand welcomed the additional award of work from BAE Systems bringing the value of potential Marand Land 400 work to >$80 million.
