Marand Precision Engineering had humble beginnings

After arriving in Australia in the mid 1950’s our founder, Andy Ellul, learned the tools of his trade in the General Motors Holden toolroom at Fishermens Bend, Victoria, before he embarked on the journey of his lifetime.

In 1969, the one-man team of Marand opened its doors at the modest shop front in Burwood.

In the few short years ahead, more than 20 machine tool companies sprung up around Australia; all were hoping to ride the back of a booming automotive industry. But it was to become an industry of stops and starts, ups and downs and finally by the early 1980’s out of the original group of companies, only Marand had survived.

Our survival was mostly due to the foresight of Andy Ellul. Rather than try to ride out the recession of 1982, he saw the need for our company to diversify, to expand, and to seek new markets both in Australia and abroad.

While Marand continued at the leading edge of the automotive industry, the charge for growth led our company into the whitegoods, steel, aviation, aerospace, defence, food and other general industries.

In June 1989, Marand took over Fred Small & Son, a special purpose machinery business. And, with the take over, Marand gained its NATA approved metrology laboratory, now Australia’s largest privately owned laboratory servicing industry and Government.

We were recognised internationally for our design and special purpose machine capability as well as ground support equipment for the Aerospace industry, both locally and overseas.

In 1998 Marand attained accreditation to ISO 9002.

As well, Marand is the Australian distributor for the European based machine makers – Heller, JW Froehlich and Weisser.

By any measure, we have come a long way. And quickly.

But we really haven’t changed. We are still a family owned company. And we are still doing what Andy Ellul loved and did best.
